Install ShutterFX is a neat and well designed photo editing tool for Android. It features a beautiful user interface, easy to use filters and effects, plus color enhancements and vignetting. It’s also an incredibly easy app to use so what it lacks in features it makes up for in intuitiveness and simplicity.

It’s very simple to use and might suit the casual Android photographer and Instagram user. It offers filters, effects, vignetting and color control sliders for adjusting brightness, contrast and saturation. Notably, however, there are no frames or additional editing tools like tilt-shift, red-eye removal, straightening or sharpness which you find in many quality photo editors.
Using the app is easy. First pick an image; either from your gallery or by taking one with your camera. You can then crop the image before hitting the editing. Along the bottom of the screen are tabs for filters (24 to choose from), color control, vignetting and effects (11 to try). Work your way through these to create your final image. You can then share your image to places like Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (plus whatever other platforms you use on your device). It’s very social network friendly too as it lets you write a caption before you post.
There are three main issues with the app however that might put you off. Most annoyingly, the frequent crashes. This occurs in the free app when you go to purchase one of the paid-for filters. It additionally happens when you return to the app mid-way through an edit. The only way to avoid it is to close the app completely when you leave, otherwise it will crash altogether anyway. This really does become frustrating when you use the app and clearly there needs to be some work done to stop this from happening.
Compared to a vast number of photo editing apps, such as PicShop Pro and Snapseed, ShutterFX is pretty low on functionality. There are no frames for example and it lacks a variety of basic photographic edits, such as tilt shift and red-eye removal. While this perhaps means it’s fine for throwing a filter on and posting to a social network, it’s pretty unimpressive if you’re trying to create a nice image. This is furthered by the fact the final image resolutions are really quite small compared to the original you took. Again, this is possibly a good thing for sharing snaps on social networks but awful if you enjoy editing pictures and selecting resolutions yourself.
For creating quickly edited images for sharing, it’s a handy little app. If you have aspirations above Instagram however, you’ll find it sadly lacking in functionality.
Perhaps due to its lack of features, it is actually very easy to use. You still need to avoid the crashing triggers if you can, but it’s very straightforward to create and share an image.
This perhaps depends on the type of photographer you are. If you want an app that plays nice with Instagram, this is a good choice and something you might use regularly. However the frequent crashes and lack of features will definitely put off people who take genuine pride in their pictures.
The interface is smooth, nice to use and looks really good, definitely a highlight.
